  • University R.U. Utrecht Biology 1972 Subjects: Plant ecology, electron microscopy, mycology.
  • PhD 1978 titled Identification of wood-inhabiting Aphyllophorales in pure culture (SIM 16: 1-248)

Professional career

  • Since 1972 employed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science (Amsterdam) at the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures. Currently Head of the Collection Department.

Current responsibilities

  • Maintenance of 60.000 microbial strains
  • MycoBank, the depository of nomenclatural novelties
  • Index Fungorum
  • Research interest: wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes

  • EmbaRC (EU project, production of Code of Conduct on biosecurity; search for new genes for taxonomy and identification)
  • GBRCN (Global Biological Resource Collections Network, initiated by OECD)
  • MOSAICS (EU project, interpretation and implementation of the CBD)
  • Digitizing the Dutch Biodiversity Collections (NWO-groot, coordinator)
  • Eurocat (EU project, catalogue of life)
