The committee for Fusarium taxonomy

The Committee for Fusarium taxonomy resides both under the International Commission for the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the International Society for Plant Pathology (ISPP).

Its "terms of reference" compiled by G. Neish in 1990 include:
to compile, for Fusarium, a list of all names with bibliographic details;
to determine whether nomenclatural types exist for these names;
to assemble all available data on previous examinations made of these types;
to re-examine and describe all existing type material with the re-examination to be conducted, whenever possible, by workers affiliated with at least two separate institutions;
to compare type specimens with available ex-type cultures;
to make these data available to interested workers for their detailed consideration and thus obtain a consensus of opinion on the application of names to taxa in the form-genus Fusarium in accordance with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature;
to establish sets of lyophilized cultures and dried-down cultures of isolates that have been chosen as typical representatives of names in current use;
to publish, at timely intervals, any results achieved.

W. Gams was elected as chairman in 1995.

Communication on Fusarium is effected through the Fusarium Newsletter, published by B. Summerell, Sydney. A European Fusarium seminar will be held in Szeged, Hungary, 1-5 Sept. 1997. An International Fusarium workshop will take place at IMI, Egham, UK, after the International Congress of Plant Pathology, 17-21 Aug. 1998.
